The current state of our country and the recent health pandemic poses many new challenges (and opportunities) for all of us. Like many of you, I am navigating my way through this journey--sometimes gracefully, and sometimes, not so much.
I have been working on homeschooling both of my children, while attempting to work from home simultaneously. I am not going to lie, I am absolutely loving this much time with my monsters. Life is just so busy. Between work, school, extracurricular activities, and sports, it is a rarity these days that we all get to sit down together. So having the opportunity to be with my family all day, every day has made my heart very happy--even if it is to complete our assignments virtually for work and school. Traditions of having dinners together have been long lost most days of the week. The craziness of life, although sweet, is also overwhelming much of the time. So, I really have been using this time at home with my children to focus on the positive things in my life. It is often pretty easy to identify the things we do not like--in ourselves, in others, and in our world. Oh, how quickly we can all plunge into that cycle of negativity. Feeling like the world is weighing you down? Why not take a "time-out"? I am not ashamed to admit that I need an "adult" time-out here and there. A few moments to myself to re-group, to put things into perspective, and to shift my focus back to the present. Recently, I have been trying to have a few mindful moments by myself in the morning--before anyone else is awake in the house. It takes just a few seconds to a few minutes to send positive vibes out into the world and to be thankful for all of the gifts and opportunities this world has presented to us. Along with reflection, I have been trying to take advantage of the nicer weather outside. It is amazing how a few deep breaths of fresh air and a little Vitamin D, can boost your body and mind. For me, family means the most--especially during times of crisis. Instead of taking these moments for granted, let's embrace them. Let's practice being thankful, slowing down once in a while (or taking a full-on time-out), and holding our face up to the sun. Sending positive vibes your way!! Caroline

As we get ready to head back to school, I wanted to start a little "food for thought" conversation about the roles and responsibilities of occupational therapy (OT) practitioners within the school setting. What is your take on this? What do you think the purpose of OT is in school? I would love to hear your thoughts and open up a discussion from all perspectives (families, students, OT's, teachers, child study team members, other related service providers, etc.).
Welcome to my occupational therapy communication board! I have spent the summer trying to think of ways to expand our abilities to communicate, collaborate and share ideas. I am not overly tech-savoy, so please be patient as I try to expand the website. I will do my best to respond to questions, comments and posts. Welcome aboard!
